My favorite street turned forty today.
My love of Sesame Street is something I have never outgrown. I still count it as one of my favorite television shows, which, yes, is probably something I might not want to admit considering I turn 36 in 15 days. But in my head Bert, Ernie, Big Bird, Oscar, and Grover are all real people, and I credit Maria, Luis, Gordon and Susan for helping me teach myself to read at age four. Thanks to Sesame Street I know that C is for cookie, that peligro is Spanish for danger, that when you go back make the first thing the last, and that everybody sleeps.
I watched the show when I was little, and then again when my little sister came along. Now I watch it almost daily with Henry and Eleanor, and am thrilled that they've become avid fans, too. I love sharing something with them that brings back happy memories of my own childhood. Here's hoping that Sesame Street's still on in another forty years, so I can post about watching with my grandkids and how I'm almost 80 but still love Big Bird. Even if Big Bird at that point is a animatronic holographic robot.
